Drywall Estimating 101: How to Calculate How Much Drywall You Need for Any Room
Jacob Brochu • September 16, 2026

From square footage to sheet count: a straightforward guide to ordering drywall without over- or under-buying.

Ordering too little drywall means a second trip to the supply house mid-project. Ordering too much means wasted material and wasted money. Whether you're a contractor bidding a job or a homeowner tackling a basement remodel yourself, getting your drywall count right the first time keeps your project on schedule and on budget.

Here's a simple formula similiar to what Dube's Drywall Supply uses to help customers order exactly what they need, plus a real-world example you can follow along with.

The Basic Formula

At its core, drywall estimating comes down to square footage:

Wall square footage = (Perimeter of room × Wall height)

Ceiling square footage = (Room length × Room width)

Add those two numbers together, then subtract for doors and windows, and you'll have your total square footage of drywall needed. From there, divide by the square footage of a single sheet to get your sheet count.

  • A standard 4' x 8' sheet = 32 sq. ft.
  • A 4' x 12' sheet = 48 sq. ft.

Don't Forget the Waste Factor

Even careful planning results in cut-offs, mistakes, and the odd damaged sheet. Most contractors build in a 10-15% waste factor on top of their calculated total. For rooms with lots of angles, closets, or soffits, lean toward the higher end.

Worked Example: A 12' x 12' Room, 8' Ceilings

Let's walk through a standard bedroom with one door and one window.

Step 1: Calculate wall area

  • Perimeter = (12 + 12 + 12 + 12) = 48 linear feet
  • Wall height = 8 feet
  • Wall area = 48 x 8 = 384 sq. ft.

Step 2: Calculate ceiling area

  • 12 x 12 = 144 sq. ft.

Step 3: Add walls + ceiling

  • 384 + 144 = 528 sq. ft.

Step 4: Subtract openings

  • Standard door (3' x 6'8"): subtract about 20 sq. ft.
  • Standard window (3' x 4'): subtract about 12 sq. ft.
  • 528 – 20 – 12 = 496 sq. ft.

Step 5: Add your waste factor (10%)

  • 496 x 1.10 = 546 sq. ft.

Step 6: Divide by sheet size

  • Using 4' x 8' sheets (32 sq. ft. each): 546 ÷ 32 = 17 sheets

That's your order: 17 sheets of 4' x 8' drywall for this room, with enough buffer to cover cuts and mistakes without leaving you short.

Does Sheet Size Matter?

It does, for more than just your sheet count. Longer sheets, like 4' x 12', mean fewer seams on longer walls, which can mean less mudding, taping, and sanding down the line. For a room with 12-foot walls, running full-length 4' x 12' sheets horizontally can eliminate a full seam per wall compared to standard 4' x 8' sheets. The trade-off is that longer sheets are heavier and harder to maneuver, especially on ceilings or in tight spaces. For most standard rooms, 4' x 8' remains the easiest to handle; for larger open rooms or commercial jobs, longer sheets are worth the extra planning.

Don't Forget the Rest of the Job

Drywall sheets are only part of the material list. As a rule of thumb, plan for:

  • Joint compound: roughly one 5-gallon bucket per 10-12 sheets for a standard 2-3 coat finish
  • Drywall tape: about 370 linear feet of paper tape per 1,000 sq. ft. of drywall
  • Screws: approximately 1 lb. of drywall screws per 2-3 sheets, depending on framing spacing

Getting these quantities right the first time saves you an extra trip, and keeps your crew moving.

Get It Right the First Time

Estimating drywall doesn't have to be complicated, but it's easy to come up short if you forget openings, waste factor, or sheet orientation.
